Cold nights can arrive quickly in autumn, so a little preparation can help protect vulnerable garden plants and keep outdoor areas easier to manage. You do not need to cover everything: focus on tender plants, exposed pots and items that are harder to replace.
1. Identify the plants that need protection first
Start with tender plants, young growth, container plants and anything in a particularly exposed position. Hardy established plants may need less attention. Check plant-specific care guidance before covering, moving or pruning anything valuable.
2. Use horticultural fleece for beds and groups of plants
Fleece is useful when you want a lightweight layer over multiple plants or a larger growing area. Leave enough room so the material is not pressed tightly against delicate growth, and secure the edges so wind cannot lift it easily.
Smart Finds currently carries a 30gsm Garden Frost Protection Fleece – 2m × 10m for larger coverage.
3. Use a fitted cover for individual pots or shrubs
For a single shrub, patio pot or smaller plant, a dedicated cover can be quicker to fit and remove. A heavier fabric can also be useful in more exposed spots. Avoid sealing plants in an airtight way for long periods; ventilation and plant-specific needs still matter.
For individual plants, see the Heavy-Duty Frost Protection Plant Cover – 120 × 180cm, 60gsm.
4. Reduce exposure around containers
Move portable pots away from the most exposed corners where practical. A sheltered wall, greenhouse, porch or other suitable protected area can reduce direct exposure. Make sure drainage remains clear and avoid leaving pots sitting in standing water.
5. Tidy fallen leaves and keep paths manageable
Autumn leaf build-up can make paths and work areas messy. Regular small clean-ups are usually easier than one large job later. If you already use a compatible garden vacuum, a replacement collection bag can help keep the equipment usable without replacing the whole tool.
Browse the Leaf Blower Vacuum Collection Bag – 60 × 44 × 35cm and check compatibility before ordering.
6. Put outdoor cushions and soft furnishings away dry
Before long wet spells, clean and fully dry outdoor cushions before storing them. A dry shed, garage or other suitable storage area is preferable to leaving soft furnishings exposed outside.
The Extra-Large Garden Cushion Storage Bag – 173 × 76 × 51cm is designed for organising bulky outdoor cushions and other seasonal soft items in a dry storage space.
7. Re-check protection after windy weather
After a windy night, check that fleece, plant covers and outdoor storage are still secure. Reposition anything that has shifted and inspect plants rather than leaving covers in place without checking them.
Keep the setup simple
The best autumn garden preparation is usually practical: protect the plants that genuinely need it, keep access areas tidy, store vulnerable outdoor items properly and check your setup as conditions change.
